Yesterday Heffner and I did an agility fun match put on by the Columbia Agility Team (CAT)! This is the second one that we've been to and it's been a really great experience both times! Since we haven't entered a trial as of yet, I figured this would be great for us to both get a more laid back feel for what a trial is actually going to be like. It's definitely a lot different walking the course myself and trying to figure out where I need to be, how I need to cue Heffner, and what speed I need… Continue

This morning Heffner, Bess, and I were part of the Teddy Bear Parade in Gresham! We went to support the Willamette Valley Great Dane Rescue. It was a lot of fun! There were a lot of people and dogs there as well as plenty of horses. Thankfully Heffner was on leash, so there were no horse chasing incidents! Our little group of danes were decked out with their teddy bears and proudly marched along the parade route. Unfortunately Bess had to go #2 about half way through. Nothing like going to the b… Continue

Holy mackrel! Somehow I managed to make it through this weekend in one piece! Albeit quite tired, but in one piece! Thur. and Fri. were actually really nice. Bess and I travelled up to Shelton, WA for the Great Dane Club of Western Washington's two day specialty. It was a TON of fun! We got to hang out with a bunch of other dane people, talk dogs, I got to learn more about structure and faults, and we got to hang out and spend time with her breeder who is an AWESOME lady! Bess went second in he… Continue

This morning Heffner, Bess and I did the Mt. Angel Oktoberfest fun run! We did the 5K because I was worried about it being too hot to do the 10K with the dogs. But first, we had a fun filled night!:P Not really. We went down to Silverton to spend the night at my parents' because my mom and dad were going to do the run as well. They live on 5 acres and the dogs like to run around their place and have fun. When it came time to go to sleep, that's where the problems started! First of all, they tho… Continue

This morning Heffner and I went out to Anderson Park in Vernonia for a 5K race benefitting their local food bank (Bess tweaked her shoulder and was home getting some unwanted rest). This past Dec. the town flooded and the food bank was there to help all the people in need. Anderson Park is a really cute little park that has a few camp sites, a creek, and a corral for horses. There are trails leading away from the main camping area into other areas. The 5K route followed one of these trails towa… Continue

where are you taking your agility classes? I'm hoping to get my dogs into agility but I'm having trouble finding a place and/or instructors. Thanks!

I do think there is a way to communicate to a pet about aggression. In fact, I talked with a dog on Saturday with aggression issues about how the world isn't really as scary as she thinks, and how her mom expects her to look to her to assess how serious a situation is. Also, that her mom would take her more places if she didn't think she'd completely freak out.
In general, it's not hard for folks to introduce the idea of purpose to a dog, whether they are consciously intuitive or not. Dogs understand language well, and intuit the thought behind it naturally. So if you say to your dog, "I think your purpose is to sit with me as I read, and keep me company," they may settle in, even if it's not in their nature.
It's even better when they come up with a purpose on their own. That's the sweet spot. My dog Benny's purpose is to love me, and to protect me when protection is required. But his real purpose, where he's happiest, is when he gets to round up the goats at my friend's ranch. Unfortunately for Benny, that's a twice-a-year opportunity.

They both looked great, and I have an appointment with the first later this month (I picked him for no particular reason other than he's had more years of experience and the other seemed to be really focused on helping pets live with heart disease, and I'm still not quite sure what's exactly causing Atlas'). I'll let you know how I like him.
