Does anyone have any advice on cooling a hot dog in this weather?

Emmett gets sooooo hot. We wet a towel, put it into the freezer, then take it out when it is frozen. We lay it on top of his back, or stick it between his legs, so that it touches his under-belly while he is laying down. We position a fan in front of him and he gets regularly hosed off on the deck.

So what are other tricks of the trade?

Would giving him a puppy cut help?

We have a St. Bernard too and we hose her off in the summer. I'm also trying to shave her. Do you have a doggy pool? Willowe loves ours :]

There's a great product out there called a 'Canine Cooler'... it's a "Thermoregulating Pet Bed" and absorbs body heat.

We have a doggy pool. Other than drinking in it, he is not too interested. The pools and their slippery surfaces are better suited for our dogs with four legs.
I am not too sure about a shave job. The bf (and Emmett's 'dad') is a son of a Vet and firmly is against shaving the hair of a dog that does not require it, unlike, a Shih Tzu. The coat insulates from the heat and sun as well. Though Emmett is more glorifed kitty cat/coffee table dog. I am not sure he spends enough time outside for that to affect him.
Our basement is exceptionally cool and lovely. We hauled him down there yesterday and he was in heaven.
Luckily today is not too bad. At least he is comfortable.

I know it is a bit late, but my suggestion is kool collars. One of the best ways to cool a dog off is on the neck/throat/chest area where there is where major blood flow is so cooling this area really helps.

BRAVO. I agree with this 1000%! Keeping the coat free flowing and matt free is the best option!!! Frequent de-shedding and combing is the best bet.

I have a few favorites. There are some great cooling beds that Heidi mentioned that work similarly to what you are doing with the frozen towels. Cooling the footpads and ears with cool water can also help since that is where dogs dissipate heat. The best place for heat dissipation is the tongue. Who hasn't seen their dog get the biggest tongue ever when they are hot?! I love ice cubes - why not try making flavored ones with diluted chicken broth or peanut butter mixed with water? Premier makes a great frozen treat maker called the Kool Dogz Ice Treat Maker that you can hide treats or toys in that you put outside in the yard. And both Zupan's and New Seasons carry Frosty Paws - doggie ice cream treats! My dogs LOVE them.

As for shaving, the fur does help insulate the body from heat as well as cold but I have seen a lot of thick undercoated dogs really love their summer cuts.

I second the Premier Kool Dogz Ice Treat Maker! That thing is amazing and totally Emmett's size! lol.

Alfie also likes the diluted chicken broth ice cubes, but we make his in his Kong. We "plug" one end of the Kong with peanut butter, and then fill the rest with diluted chicken broth. It keeps him occupied and he already recognizes it as a toy/treat when we give it to him because it's disguised in his Kong. :)

Ooooo! I love the idea of making the popsicle treat in the Kong! Awesome idea with the peanut butter plug! Thanks for the tip.
