Apartments that allow pit bulls

I am trying to help a friend with a super sweet pit bull find an apartment and am having no luck. I saw the postings earlier about the doberman looking for an apartment and called those places but nothing. In that posting someone mentioned that apartments could not breed restrict anymore and to ask the apts to call their insurance companies. I talked to a couple of places, one of them was nice enough to double check with their insurance company and still no pitbulls. So, I have two questions....1. Does anyone know of any apartments that allow pit bulls? 2. Does anyone know where I can find any "legal" info on the breed restriction policy?

Thanks so much!

Have you tried checking on craigslist? I know in the housing section, every now and then there will be an apartment or condo that says all breed friendly. You have to look very carefully and read every ad, but hey, the little furry buggers are worth it :]

I am sorry to say I had an impossible time helping my son find a place in Portland that allows pits. He had a horrible experience when he rented an apt. that was in northwest. The owner had no problem with a pit but when the neighbors saw the dog they pressured the owner into asking my son to leave!! We had signed a lease and could have put up a fight but my son felt he did not want to live in a neighborhood suffering from pit bull frenzy. It gave us an opportunity to educate the neighbors by supplying countless articles on why these dogs get a bad rap and I hope that this info did not fall on deaf ears. When trying to get "Soda" in day care, all the Pearl dog care centers said no, not because of the breed but because of other customer's reaction to the breed!!! Just when we lost all hope a wonderful person who owns an apt. rented to Aaron and "Soda" and she was willing to advocate for the breed and was willing to rent to them!! Of course Soda had been temperament tested and had references as to his disposition in the event anyone in the building questions her decision. I feel it is going to be an ongoing struggle... I wish you luck. I think renting a privately owned house or apt may be the only option for you as the breed restrictions apply for all apts. in the city. The Oregon Humane Society website has legal information plus lists all available housing.

Hi Amy. I poked around a bit as I have a friend in the same situation. I had no idea apartment buildings had breed restrictions. It’s so sad entire breeds get a bad wrap. I know we are not talking about humans, but that racism. If you sat my Aussie next to my friends Rottweiler, most people would be afraid of the Rott, but not of my Aussie. Wrong choice.

Enough ranting. There was a posting on Craigslist for Ardensale apartments in Vancouver that says they accept all breeds. I have no idea if it’s nice or not. The number listed is 360-892-5463.

Good luck.

I was going through the same situation and found an apartment company that allowed all breeds. However, one was San Remo in Beaverton- and they have since changed that. We ended up searching for a long time but found a rental off craigslist, the owners are Humane Society volunteers and they were sympathic to our plight. She or he should post an ad on craigslist stating the situation and that a pet meet could be arranged and that insurance could be purchased (State Farm) etc. to make them feel that she is a responsible owner (hopefully she or he is!)... I also brought my dog's training certificates as well when I met the landlords. Oh, and lots of cash! Craigslist is the best networking sight, check daily!!!
