"pick of the litter" information, resources & connections

What Charities do you love? Who do you think should benefit when pdxdog™.com creates special products and events that generate money? As a company, we want to make sure there is community benefit. We want to consider the little guys, as much as the bigger ones.

When we produced the Pups of Portland Calendar project, 50% of our proceeds, after expenses, went to DoveLewis.

What made that project so special was the community involvement, the professionals and volunteers who donated their expertise and time, and the people who let us take their dogs pictures. The Calendar was a big hit all the way around.

While the dollar percentage may vary on every project, we want to make sure the funds go to charities that members want to help. There is a good chance that members will be asked to be a part of the production team and share their talent and resources.

So who do you want to nominate?

I nominate DoveLewis and Bonnie Hayes. However, I'm sure there are a lot of other animal shelters similar to Bonnie Hayes - I give to them because they're in my immediate community - so maybe pdxdog could alternate so they all benefit at some point. I am also partial to Weimaraner Rescue orgs naturally (there is an Oregon Weim Rescue), but since the community consists of all breeds and their owners, it might make sense to focus on charities that resemble that mix and cut across everything ..

Hi Elizabeth,

I agree we should develop a good list and rotate who benefits. There are so many deserving groups, that alternating among several makes a ton of sense. I tend to agree that being breed specific might be tough in this community.

Thanks for putting your ideas up! This will create a list and, when it comes time for one project or another, we can whittle the list and perhaps the membership can vote.

Oh! Oh! I second the spay/neuter fund.
Also, I think there is a lot of need right over the border in Washington. SW Washington Humane society has increased their number of dog adoptions, but I know they are only able to adopt out a fraction of the total.
Second Chance Companions is cool.
Also, Friends of the Clackamas County Shelter. They could use the funds too.

My dogs say that they need new toys, but I'm trying to train them not to beg. :)
If you see anything like the Benny and Hunni Fund, please ignore. :P

Hi Andrea. The longer we are in business the more I learn about the seriously hundreds of groups in need out there. The need seems endless. We always donate something – we are such suckers for a good cause!

In my mind, I have a kind of tier system. First are the no-kill sanctuaries / shelters (we love family dogs new life). Second are the rescue groups (one or two for ever single breed). Next are the Dove Lewis and OHS types. I’m a bit partial to Dove Lewis. How grateful have we all been to have a place to go in the middle of the night...half dressed... in tears? Sometimes I give less to places I think have enough money, but then I think, if we all do that, then those places won’t have enough money anymore!

This is excellent feedback, let's keep going. When I had the Pearl Retriever I also found myself giving to many different good causes! Mostly through product donations.

I like the tier idea. I am very happy that we are getting this discussion going!

For local chariites, I like Dove Lewis too. They were wonderful to us during one of the worst times I can remember a few years back.
I also like Animal Legal Defense Fund...a group of attorneys who represent the animals in cases of abuse/neglect/etc and who work tirelessly to put abusers behind bars. They are national, but have a local office.
aldf.org

We give to shelters too. And there's always Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah....they're amazing. I went down there and volunteered once and can't wait to go back! It's truly a gorgeous area in Utah, run by true angels. I highly recommend going if you ever get the chance!

For sure the Oregon Spay/Neuter fund! I rescued 2 dogs who were both intact and they helped out soooo much! Dove Lewis too! I've been lucky and not had to use them yet (knock on wood!) but I know people who have and it's been a life saver...literally!

Thank you Andrea for starting this very important discussion.
Dove Lewis, Bonnie Hayes, Spay and Neuter are worthy Charities and deserve all the support they can get. I would also like to mention a lesser known small, 501 (c) (3) non profit, foster based rescue. Oregon Dog Rescue depends soley on donations, adoption fees and the goodwill of people.
