"pick of the litter" information, resources & connections

So this is part of a post I made yesterday:

So we vaccinate our dog per the recommended schedule and have never had any negative side effects...that is until yesterday. Lola received the Distemper Parvo HA vaccine and the Leptospirosis 4-way vaccine (neither are a new addition). Yesterday, the morning after she got the vaccine shots, she had two (diarrhea) accidents in the house which is VERY rare...it has only happened two other times and she was sick those times as well. At any rate, the doctor has blamed the vaccines, which I figured anyway, but thought I should call them just to be sure. This morning she was crying at 5 am to get out of her crate because she had to "go" again- she went twice while we were out there and both were still diarrhea. She is SUPER thirsty (and we are giving her an unlimited supply of water) and has only eaten a little bit of food.

Knowing that side effects can last for up to 2 days, I am hanging tight but decided to do some research on vaccines. What I found was that the leptospirosis vaccine can cause the most side-effects and many people opt out of that one. We go hiking and swimming a lot so we haven't opted out of it.

Lola is still not feeling well and it looks like I might bring her into the vet to have her checked out. Yesterday I spoke to the nurse and she told me that the vet recommended giving her Benadryl in case it is being caused by anxiousness. I am not quite sure how benadryl will help, but it does make her sleep a lot. I am torn on this because I feel like I am over reacting to a simple side effect from this vaccine but at the same time I do not want to ignore the fact that she isn't feeling great.

Once again I find myself grateful to have the wellness plan at Banfield...it makes it easier to just go in since the visit is free. In the end, I just want Lola back to her usual happy-go-lucky self.

One of our cats and two of our dogs have had nearly deadly reactions to vaccines twice. We had to take them in for benadryl (and more). The VERY sick dog had a fever, the runs and was vomiting (she never gets sick - ever!). Whatever the vet did fixed her and she is still with us and over 15 years old. We watch all our dogs and cats closely after shots to make sure this doesn't happen again. And yes, we do opt out of Lepto...but our dogs aren't out in the wilderness. I'm sorry you also had to go through this. I don't know what time you posted this, but did you take her to the vet?

I always recommend getting your dogs antibodies tested to make sure you are not "over vaccinating". I have actually seen dogs die from the rabies vaccine.
