particularly pit bulls, american staffordshire terriers.... whatever you prefer.
my 7 month old pit zowie is the love of my life.
WE just adopted RUFUS from the clackamas county dog services, he is a sweetie and is going to be a great addition to our family.
As a strong advocate of the breed,I feel that its my mission as a pitbull owner to protect the breed as much as i can, to deflect negative sterotypes .
I recently started volunteering for dove lewis animal hospital and look forward to helping out at many events and fundraisers. I am also very eager to become more active in pitbull rescue groups and shelters in oregon.

RUFUS IN NEED OF SURGERY, FUNDRAISING IDEAS???????

So we adopted rufus and they informed us that he had a slight limp in his back leg, but that it was no big deal......
well we took him to the vet and it turns out he will have to get surgery becuz his kneecap is out of place and there is arthritis and a ligaments that are torn.. ahhh. this is so frustrating.
we are in no position to afford the surgery.
I just want him to be happy and not be in pain anymore. he deserves a good life he is such a sweetie.

Does anybody have any ideas on fundraising… Continue

Thanks for the compliments on my dogs scarfs...cute huh? Their grama knits so she had knitted all these scraves and I just wrapped them up in it...
I am more of a painting/drawing artist...rather than a textile one...however we both use my dogs as subjects

Call me as it is easier to go over some of the thoughts I have. Some clinics and hospitals have charity funds frm which they donate funds toward surgery. Some clinics donate monies toward shelter dogs who come through their cachement area. And I found that it helps to get several estimates ( maybe you did that already). Once the best estimate I got was from the best clinic which surprised me. Once we settled on the best option, we asked if we could set up a Rufus account there ( it would be Rufus this time) and have potential donors send money to the hospital in reserve until we met out goal. Then we asked if others could raise very small sums: 5, 10, 25 dollars, everything helped, in every way. There is a clothing consignment shop near me and the owner loves dogs so I am going to see if I can take stuff/clothes up on consignment and ask if she could make a Rufus donation jar or sign about why these particular items are on consignment there from me with little Rufus labels, She may say yes or no but sooner or later someone will say yes. And bit by bit we'll get there. In the meantime I don't know a whole lot about this but I know there are ways/remedies to relieve arthritic etc. until a more permanent solution can be found Some of my friends in rescue do that. I can ask them.

call when you can as I have some clinics for additional estimates in mind.

No. For 12 years I have worked on shelter reform locally. We find free legal help for dog owners who have been cited by animal control agencies, primarily MCAS, because at least in Multnomah County, any citizen can complain about a dog's conduct. It doesn't have to be a legitimate complaint. They are guilty until proven innocent. So few can afford attornies and may lose their dog as a consequence , so my husband/partner who is a maritime lawyer, has for a long time representated citizens for free at hearings locally. At MCAS, the person who files a complaint is represented for free by the county regardless of the merit of the case. The defendant has no free help. So we find that.

I work on shelter reform , a hopeless orphan cause, and also help citizens find the resources they need from training to advice to whatever emerges to help them keep their dogs safely and humanely. Inevitably the breed and owner who is most discriminated against is the one who owns a pit bull or "suspicious" mix despite the fact that in our review of public records as a breed they were no more responsible for incidents and the incidents were no more remarkable than that of any other breed. I also do all I can to help dogs at agencies or shetlers or whose owners can't keep them, find safe homes again. I advertise and network. I look for fosters and try to help rescues. Those with the greatest need once again are pit bulls and suspect mixes. I have gotten public records from MCAS for 12 years now. That is how I found their covert pit bull ban, which was then confirmed by a national shelter reform expert ( www.nokilladvocacycenter.org) to whom I sent several hundred copies of records. Some of what I have discovered from records that is pretty upsetting is posted on www.nwshelterreform.org, not my website, I am an Internet idiot. Gail

I'm glad you went out and adopted Rufus. I do the same. I think about it all night then just figure I will find the resources somehow to take care of the lame dog, the sick dog , the poor one, the one who stays on my mind or for whom time is short. I also find that some agencies welcome someone's/your sponsorship of a given dog and advertising for him or her. I often list just my own number on the ad so that I can advocate for him or her and also seek resources for him/her if needed by the potential adopter. Gail

About Rufus, the weimeraner pit mix at Clackamas County Dog Control in need of a home. Have you called Diana Hallmark, Director of Clackamans Dog Control about running a personal ad for him in the Oregonian? I think she would likely be open to it. I run almost one a week like a personal ad with lots of personal detail and have found good homes that way for dogs, often pit bull dogs belonging to persons losing their homes or for the shelters I work with. Call me if you would like more information/thoughts( I just don't get to e-mail timely). My telephone number is 503.625.4563. The direct line for the director of Clackamas County Animal Services Director is 503. 650.3944 to check if she would welcome an ad.
