Hi Deena, Thanks so much for taking to time for such an informative response, I really appreciate it! I worry about rinsing or even spraying Ellyot at the moment, because he's so cold- without his fur he's shivering constantly. And because his skin…

Hi Carol, I feel kind of lame admitting this, but the only reason I hesitated taking Ellyot to the vet earlier was that money is super tight right now, but he's not really getting better, and he has been displaying other symptoms as well (lack of a…

I hope that by now you have the answer for sweet Ellyot's discomfort/pain. I have no experience in grooming at all, but our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel went thru pain, crying, scratching, screaming starting in August 2008. It took several differen…

I am sorry for the delay in my response. I am in Mexico. First thing to remember it probably nothing the groomer did wrong...intentionally. (if at all) There are so many factors that come into play. Think about if your hair was matted and dirty. Stu…

His skin is pink, but how can I tell if that's irritation and not just the natural color of his skin? I don't see any bumps or red marks. I think your right, that some of it is his tail, but not all of it- he sometimes is in obvious pain. My heart i…

Is his skin red or pink at all? If it is he could be brush burnt or shampoo sensitive , If he is allergic to shampoo he'll probably have bumps, if he is brush burnt or clipper burnt you'll see red marks from where the clipper or brush went over his…

Back story- I'm a new owner of a 4-year-old papillon, Ellyot. His former owner had done all his grooming herself, but had not groomed him for quite some time and he was just covered with matts. We took Ellyot to the groomer, because we were too nerv…

Jake was my first Golden Retriever and he died on the young side, very quickly. I know many of you have good advice and questions about many of these hard issues.

Introduce Yourself
I'm a first time dog owner, also wife of 11 years, homeschooling mom to my 7 & 10 year old children. We just moved to Hillsboro with our pet turtle, Sonic. This is the first place we've been allowed to have furry pets, so we immediately got our first dog. Given to us by my mother in law, who was unable to deal with his high energy, but he is a perfect fit for our family.
Tell us about your pets
Ellyot is a 4-year-old purebred Papillon. He is completely deaf and has been since birth. He knows and obeys many signs (mostly ASL, but some popular dog obedience signs).

Hi, Ruby! Unfamiliar as I am with all the places that comments appear in these pages, I JUST NOW noticed your questions to me back in March about my Papillons and flyball.

Let me preface my answers with the fact that this is Eli's A#1 favorite thing to do in the world. We do competitive agility, obedience, and therapy work and this is his fav.

Would this work for a deaf dog? ABSOLUTELY -- unlike obedience or agility, the desired behavior for the dog does not depend on ad hoc courses or handler decisions. It's "go down over the jumps, do a good box turn and retrieve the ball, come back to Mom, celebrate". That pattern is taught in tiny chunks, so that the dog performs each safely and confidently before it is chained into the full sequence.

A bonus to flyball training is that you would be working with a group of handlers/dogs dedicated to making your dog feel safe and confident. Socialization issues are worked out cooperatively and positively.

You ask whether Paps take to flyball -- Papillons take to ANYTHING. For this sport, however, my personal feel is that it's easier on Paps at the large end of their size range. Eli's 12" at the shoulder, which allows him to have the flyball jumps set at the lowest height (7"). And we use tiny tennis balls rather than the medium or large ones -- easier to catch and, more importantly, to hang onto while running back over the jumps.

Sorry to have taken so long to reply!

Yes! We bought that book when we first got Fenway. She is a year old now and is doing great with her training. I am a clicker trainer with Wonder Puppy and in stead of the clicker I use a light to mark her behavior. We are very proud!
