Portland's dog loving social network

It seems there are references to dogs swimming in the comments section of this group, but it's hard to get to the actual places (and the comments appear to max out at a certain number of pages.)

I thought perhaps discussion forums for specific types of places might be good. In this one, I'm selfishly hoping for any suggestions for places to take a dog swimming :) Please include a specific location or directions if possible.

Troutdale ... I-84 exit 18 ... Lewis & Clark exit ... turn north, go under freeway, you'll dead end (on your right) at thousand acres off leash park ... both the Sandy & the Columbia, plus tons of smaller "ponds"

I am very new to getting involved with pdxdog. I started to and my other dog Rainey died of cancer. I got very depressed and then I have had some health issues. My other dog Sage is a lab that loves swimming and she misses Rainey so much. There is a small creek down in Wilsonville where I live, and when it fills up for the winter it might be pretty fun for a few dogs to play together. I am sure the coast has areas too. But wasnt there a therapy pool someone told me about for dogs with arthritis? That is what we were starting when Rainey died. I will try to find it again, thanks, Carla

Great references. I take Ellie to Sauvie Island. Before you get to the Beach Strip, there are trails that lead down to coves, no people, just great beach and water.
I've been thinking about pulling a dog date together so we can all go together. I am sharing a real find in this one. Do your dogs like to swim in winter?

Thanks for the insider tip, mums the word ;-) I've not been to Sauvie Island yet. We're from Florida so no, my dogs are not accustomed to swimming in winter or in frigid waters, and neither am I!! But we're happy to tag along and dip our toes (and paws) in the water, see how they take to it. I'm down for a doggie play/swim date anytime, that's one of the main reasons I moved to Portland. Just say when.... :-)

Hi Sonja. I'm really 'late to the party' in responding to your question from months ago about swimming for dogs. I wanted to let you know that an indoor dog park named Fidos will be opening in late August and will have an indoor swimming pool for play or water therapy. It is actually my partner and I opening it. :-) This idea came because our German Shepherd ripped two of her knee ligaments last year, incurring a surgery named TPLO. She desperately needed non-weight bearing exercise...and in the middle of winter!

Our pool is already up and filled, 25 feet by 13 feet and about 5 feet deep. Our indoor dog parks are also a collective 13,000sf. We are very excited and have been working so hard to get everything ready!

Our website will be up soon, but for now, we are on Facebook Fan Page at Fidos Indoor Dog Park. Tina :-)
