Don’t forget that Dr. Dunbar has decided to continue to provide complementary downloadable PDF versions of both his BEFORE & AFTER You Get Your Puppy in order to get this crucial, time-sensitive information into the hands as many people as possible as a way to help keep pups from becoming problem dogs who wind up unsocialized, untrained, and therefore unwanted.

We got the biting under control on Major. He just had to learn what gentle meant.

don't allow him to lick your face, totally break the in your face stuff ... he doesn't understand where you want the line between lick & nip, so don't allow him in anyone's face & have his owners enforce the rule too :)

Hello,
I don't have a new puppy, but I borrow one from my neighbors at least twice a week, his name is Major and he's 5 months old. My neighbors are older and they just aren't giving the puppy enough attention. So when Major comes to visit he's quite wound up. I do have two dogs that keep this puppy very busy and they wrestle and run around the backyard. He is a quick learner and has already learned sit, stay, down, fetch, off, come, relax, and gentle. The problem that I'm having is that he snaps at your face when you are down near him. He's trying to lick your face, but it's more of a nip and lick..then just a lick. I tell him 'ouch' when it happens and he stops, but I just don't think he gets it.
I also try to prevent it by telling him to be gentle when he goes to lick my face, and that sometimes works. We never tell him he's bad when it happens. I'm a little worried that he'll continue this when he gets bigger and then it will be a bigger problem. Does anyone have any ideas on how to curb this behavior?

Hello all!
A new puppy is both a joy and a bit of a terror - can be overwhelming! I'm always happy to try to answer questions or offer moral support! I've been a breeder for 30+ years, so I have helped a lot of people through the puppy phases.
