And while he is, of course, my perfect angel in most aspects, he has never been cooperative with me when I attempt to brush his teeth at home. Any thoughts on what works? And maybe more important at this point, any recommendations on vets for dentistries?

Comment by Robert on April 13, 2008 at 6:58am: A friend of mine has a lab mix(8 years old) and it was recently found that he has hypoglycemia(low blood sugar and high insulin levels). My friend is feeding the dog smaller amounts and more frequently to keep the blood sugar level up. Tests are underway, but the cause is what worries me. Anyone have any experience with this type of problem? thx

Re: the diabetes, I would strongly suggest looking into alternative modalities! When I worked at Holistic Pet Vet we saw quite a few cases of diabetes, and some were managed VERY well with homeopathics, herbs, and general naturopathy. I would also recommend acupuncture and true Oriental medicine, as I know it to be incredibly effective for many diseases that allopathic medicine cannot treat successfully. Hawthorne Vet Clinic (233-2332), Holistic Pet Vet Clinic (503-293-6666) and Kindred Spirits Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Clinic (503-687-0550) are places to try if you're interested. Good luck!

Comment by Rubi on April 7, 2008 at 1:45pm: Have you considered massage therapy? I've worked with Dachshunds that have had embolisms and other spinal issues with success. Massage is a wonderful treatment for rehabilitation when they've had such a traumatizing event. It not only reduces inflammation, but can aid in the recovery of lost muscle mass. Have you thought about doing hydrotherapy for her in your bath tub? Don't fill it very high, just enough so you can hold her in it and she can doggie paddle. Let me know if you'd like to talk about massage therapy for her... I can give you the full rundown.

I have always known that this is hazard of the breed, but had hoped she would not succomb since she is not overweight and also is very active. However, as the vet told me - it can still happen due to the long back that has been bred in to them. Hopefully, this will never happen to anyone else's dog - but I now have lots of info about this - Zoey did have to have surgery - and is still recovering - but doing well. Have had to learn a lot with a dog undergoing rehab - so would be happy to share ideas, what to look for, etc.
