Brandy's story...
Brandy, a 2-year old Labrador Retriever mix can't wait to meet you! Brandy is a beautiful girl with dark fur with brindle highlights. As with all of our wonderful dogs, volunteers play every morning with Brandy and practice basic commands with her like Sit, Stay, and Down. Brandy is a fun, active girl who will excel in one of our training classes, and be your best buddy on long walks and hikes.

As with all of our dogs, Brandy has been spayed, micro-chipped, vaccinated and behavior tested. She will go home with a certificate for an examination by a King County veterinarian and an identification tag. PLUS, most dog adoptions include six weeks of training in one of our on-campus dog behavior courses - a great way to start off on the right paw!

Introduce to kids 12+, dogs (req). (beh)

Brandy is currently in foster care and not at the shelter, if you would like to meet with her please email adoptions@seattlehumane.org for more information.

This pet comes with a 30-day gift of Sheltercare pet insurance, the number one brand of pet insurance for adopted pets. Over 2.5-million adopted pets have already been insured!

This pet has been microchipped and registered with 24PetWatch, the number one lost pet recovery service for adopted dogs and cats. Over 3.1-million pets registered.

About Our Shelter...
The Seattle Humane Society has been operating for over 100 years as a private, nonprofit animal welfare organization. We are proud to serve the people and animals of King County with a variety of programs including adoptions, veterinary services, dog training classes, a pet food bank, and humane education
for children of all ages. Through our outreach, advocacy, and services, we strive to ensure that animal companionship is accessible to all.

We have no affiliation at all with King County Animal Care & Control shelters (Kent and Crossroads) nor with Seattle Animal Shelter. They are municipal shelters supported by your tax dollars. The Humane Society of Seattle/King County (also known as the Seattle Humane Society) is private and receives no local, state or federal support. We are not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) or with the American SPCA (ASPA). Humane societies and SPCAs are all independent. We do have a contract with the cities of Renton and Medina and we board their stray dogs during the holding period. After the stray hold has passed, if the pet passes health and behavior testing, we make the available for adoption. We do try to help the King County Animal Care & Control by rescuing some of their adoptable dogs and bringing them to our campus where we can give them the care they need including spay or neuter surgery and then find them homes of their own.

Karen,

I did a bit of quick Googling and found a bunch of Mastiff's for rescue adoption here http://www.adoptapet.com/pet3292449.html Princess Leia is in McMinnville, OR and there is a phone number to call! I don't know how long these ads have been up, but it wouldn't hurt to call!

Good luck!

Hi Karen,

Sorry I should have mentioned these were ads off of Craigs list, I thought they both had contact info in them, but I guess the second one doesn't. I agree with you on adopting from the Shelters or Rescue if you can find what you want - I would think the really large dogs would stay at shelters longer as a lot of people don't won't them...finding a purebred Mastiff there however might not happen.

Is there a local English Mastiff Rescue in Oregon? I would check with them if you can find one and of course you can check at the shelters on line these days...but I am assuming you are already doing that? The Clackamas county and Multnomah county shelters you can check for adoptable dogs on line, then you have to go meet them and fill out the forms, etc.

Last time I checked there (looking for a friend for Boscoe before we decided to adopt the rescue pugs) they each had some really cute, REALLY big puppies, but my guess is that they were newfoundland's or crosses....not sure you want one and they may be gone by now as well. Let me know if yo need help locating those on line....seems I had a bit of trouble when I first tried going there...once I got it bookmarked I was fine though.

Haven't heard back from my Dane friends, they get pretty busy at times and probably don't have a dog for you themselves, but they will probably put feelers out as well and will let me know if anything comes up.

I prefer to rescue a dog from a shelter or rescue instead of one that is already in a home...but I didn't see any link to check on the dogs you mentioned....

Did you see this dog? She may not be quite as large as your Mastiff, but she doesn't look small either....

Allie is our sweet 7 month old "heinz 57" pup. We are looking for a new home that might be the perfect fit for her OR someone that would be willing to "board" her until our living situation would allow us to take her again. (anywhere from 2-6 months). We truly love her but are in a position that forces us to choose between our human family and our furry family.

Allie is, at best guess, basenji, great dane and who knows what in between. She's a tall slender dog and very pretty, her pictures don't do her justice. I am a stay at home mom and with 2 kids, 2 dogs and a disabled family member, we really never go anywhere. I'm not sure what this means for Allie's social skills. She does get anxious when someone comes to the door, but warms up as soon as she sees we've allowed that person inside. She is a total lover and will sit ON you (not next to you) any chance she gets. She knows her manners though and stays off the furniture and tries really hard to stay seated while you greet her. She is fabulous with my toddler and preschooler although she is a bit clumsy and knocks them over occasionally. She loves to chase cats but does not hurt them. She's relentless though and would probably make an indoor cat insane, so a cat free home might be best. Allie is an indoor dog and fully potty trained. She sleeps in a crate at night and any time we're gone. She's still a bit of a chewer but will chew appropriately as long as you give her something to chew on. She is one of those dogs that just crazy loves her people. She's eager to please and needs only a stern voice for direction. I think she could really be any dog you wanted her to be with a little love, direction and patience. She is up to date on shots and not currently spayed but we will split the cost of a spay as a rehoming fee to anyone interested. She will NOT go unspayed. Sorry.

If you think she might be a good dog for your home, please email me and tell me why. If you think you might be able to board her for me, email me and we can discuss how that might work.

Baja is 2 1/2 years, half english mastiff and staffordshire terrior. She is very loving, great with kids and good with other dogs. She is house trained, lives both inside and outside. She stands about 22" at the shoulder. We have taught her the basic commands sit, stay, release and lay down. It is really hard to say good bye, but under the situation of losing my job, I can not take care of her anymore. A small rehoming fee to the right family. If anymore questions please email me @ eyratliff@aol.com

OK, so you are looking for a female only or would a male or female work for you?
Karen Comment by Karen on February 1, 2010 at 3:59pm
Thanks for the info....Unfortunately I prefer females and have had 3 pairs of females...I know its trickier but my female now is very passive so as long as the other female would get along with her. She is a purebred English Mastiff but I don't mind a mix.

Also, I forgot about the canned food....I don't think canned food (except the kind for cats and small dogs) is usually meant to be a complete and balanced diet....so you wouldn't want to make that to high a percentage of your dogs diet.

The main thing is to feed the best quality (non grain if you can afford it) diet you can, don't let them run hard after they eat....don't let them drink too much water at one time (if they are hot from play or it is warm outside) and feed them at least 2 meals a day.

Most bloat is caused by bad food in my opinion, which causes excessive gas to develop in the stomach, but I don't think anyone quiet knows for sure all the possible reasons bloat can occur.
Anne Sheldon Comment by Anne Sheldon on February 1, 2010 at 2:49pm
Hi Karen,

Yes the raw food diet can be daunting, the issue with adding more canned food is (you are right that is won't expand, that is correct - but some types could still cause the gas that can create bloat) but it is really bad for their teeth and I think it would also be very expensive to fill a Mastiff cross up with canned food....but I have found some canine caviar canned turkey for $1 a can (bought in bulk) and my Dane loves that as a treat with his raw food.

There is a Dane Rescue in Pdx, but last time I checked they didn't have have dogs needing placement...that is a good thing! But of course that might have changed by now...I had a hard time locating them as well, but I did find them eventually. Sorry, I don't have that info still.

You should be looking for a neutered male to get along with your female, that will have the best chance of working for you as females will try to dominate each other in most cases and a male will usually be submissive to a female.

I will see if they have any Dane crosses or smaller Danes that are neutered males available - good luck with your search!

Anne
