Autism Service Dogs of America ASDA is a non-profit, community based organization that provides uniquely trained service dogs to families with children living with autism.
ASDA is currently accepting applications for volunteer puppy raisers to a new litter of golden retrievers. Puppy raisers ensure that ASDA puppies are properly socialized and well mannered. The dogs are placed with carefully selected puppy raisers when the puppies are three months old for approximately 12-15 months. During this period the dogs are exposed to a variety of environments. Outfitted with a service dog cape so a puppy raiser can take the puppy into most public places. The dogs need exposure to children and elders, stimulating active environments, as well as quiet settings. Puppies need rest, quiet time and patient handling. Quality time with a puppy raiser will prepare the dog for a lifelong role as a service dog for a child with autism.

Laura & Bailey Comment by Laura & Bailey on June 11, 2009 at 9:15pm
Bailey is a retired Animal Assisted Therapy Dog, but still does alot of work in his daily exchanges. We worked with kids through Trillium Services/Parry Center and also Rigler School Read to Dogs summer program. Also participated with SMART (which looks like it will be no longer) and Montisory School Substituting. There were couple of Autistic kids at Parry Center, but none of those we worked directly with.
