Portland's dog loving social network

Hello All,

My name is Rose, and I just adopted Cylde (http://www.familydogsnewlife.org/?p=720) on Sunday. He's a terrific dog, but I haven't had a dog since high school, and I'm not sure if I'm doing it right.

He has very old dog skin, so I put him on limited ingredients. He's a good dog, pretty much crate trained, really very well behaved, and good with the cats (although one of the cats is currently invisible)

He has a grooming appointment on Saturday and a Vet apointment (with Moreland Vet, where the cats go) on Monday. Are there questions I should ask or things I should do? I'm having in groomed where he used to go and they were so happy that he was adopted.

Also I would like to find out where some small dogs play. He really liked the other dogs in the shelter. He belonged to a older man who died, so he hasn't had a ton of experience with dog parks etc.

Anyway, tell me anything that you think might help. He's a really terrific dog, and I want to do right by him. I'm not adverse to being told I'm an idiot, so please fire away

Rose

What part of town are you in? A great resource is Urban Fauna in the Pearl. 503-223-4602. Suzanne owns it and is super sweet and loves dogs so much. She has a daycare, and on Sunday has a small dog playgroup. She has access to all sorts of events and such for dogs. What sort of doggie is Clyde? Sound to me like your doing instinctively exactly the right things. Love is, of course, the most important, and obviously you have no lack of that comodity! Best of luck.

Hi Rose (& Clyde!),

I have a lot of WFT friends who have blogs - if you want, I'll be happy to pass their urls along. Very entertaining and always full of good info.

I also second the idea of a good shampoo - us terriers do have very dry, sometimes itchy skin. :)

Don't worry! Sounds like you're doing the right things. The vet will be able to answer lots of your questions.

LexiDog in the Pearl has small dog playgroups every Sunday and the new LexiDog location which is opening at the end of the month in downtown Lake Oswego will also have Sunday playgroups... it's a fun way to let your dog play and meet other dogs of all ages (and you won't have to be outside in the rain!) :)

Congrats on adopting your dog and best of luck!

Here are my 2 cents. As a groomer who has extensive experience with Terriers, I see a lot of wires with skin issues. This is a breed that had a coat that is meant to come out, not be clipped away. Being a senior I would not suggest stripping him, but there are other options that can help in the grooming process. Diet and home grooming maintenance will go a long way to help your new friend. My salon is located inside Lexidog(Pearl) and I work Sundays while the play group goes on if you would like to talk.

Dogs Dig It Doggie Daycare in SE Portland has Mini Dog Mondays where your little one (depending on breed) will get in for half price. Check out the webcams to get a feel for the place. Also, when you adopt a shelter dog, as a thank you for saving a life, your first day is free.

Hi All--

Just an update on Mr. Cylde R. Barker. He is doing really well. We took him off wheat and corn and he's like a puppy! He is full of the dickens, and his skin is clearing up and only gets bad when his dog sitter accidentially fed him wheat. We are probably terrible spoiling dog companions but he is a great joy.
