Portland's dog loving social network

Just a heads up everybody, that dogs are going to be no longer welcome at the Saturday Farmer's Market down by PSU. The link to the story is at the bottom of this post.

As someone who lives downtown, it's a real joy for me to walk up to PSU with my pup and coffee in tow. Is anybody aware of any protests or write-ins? How would we go about getting this changed?

Yea I've had the same experience too. Then again I've also had the same experience with people and their kids/strollers who aren't really conscious of where they are in relation to other shoppers. There's got to be some common ground between the public at large and we as dog owners.

I did find this out about the Hollywood FM:

"Starting in the 2009 season, the Hollywood Farmers' Market in NE Portland will offer dog-free hours and hours when dogs are allowed.

From 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Market days, dogs will not be allowed in the Market. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., dogs will be allowed in the Market in accordance with the Market’s other dog-related rules."

Something like that would make A LOT more sense to me.

When I lived in Europe, dogs were accepted everywhere-in pubs, in cafes, in stores. Americans have this uber clean mentality and consider animals dirty. Science tells us that a dog's mouth is cleaner than a human"s. To that end, I think banning dogs, especially in Portland which is very dog friendly, is bad politics. I will be banning the Farmer's Market in protest to this action. Kudos to the Hollywood market for allowing our furry family. And I agree about children and their strollers. How many times have I been shopping only to have to stand in the aisle and wait while a very large stroller blocks my passage.

I hope my local Montavilla Farmers Market does not do this. Taking Emmett out to the farmers market in his wagon is one of my favorite spring/summer things to do.

Boy I hope our market in Cedar Hills doesn't follow suit or we can't go there anymore

I was really disappointed to find out about this as well. One day recently I was walking by the market with my dog, and since he wasn't allowed, vendors lost my business because I kept right on walking. Harumph! I think the idea of dog-free hours as well as dog-welcome hours is a great one!

Get use to it. there seems to be a big push to ban dogs at all farmers markets. Parkrose farmers market bans dogs...it's coming to your favorite market soon. we as collective dog owners have a huge voice, but we're like the democrats...can't all agree on the same things..we don't lock step too good.
