A Story to Tell: How Did You Pick Your Pups Name ?
I'm sure we have millions of stories to tell and they would be fun to read and share. Let's find those great stories. Do you think your pup likes his/her name? Would you change your dog's name? Did you pick their name before you got them, the day you got them or after they came home?
If you have a cat, include them too.

i had angels name picked out before i got her (peanut) then the day she came home.... changed it to angel. i would not change her name for the world!

My dog's former name was Spikey- his previous owners' said he responded to it but I didn't think it fit him really well. As I was walking through the pet store the day he came into my life- "Spumoni" dawned on me- it has a similar sound and he looks just like his name- 3 flavors :) we also call him "Spoon" for short

Well... Marley's original shelter name was Jonathan and we were told he had been named after one of the volunteers at the shelter. We adopted him on a Saturday morning and spent the entire day trying to think of a name that would truly fit him. At the end of the day, we were calling him Finn. On Sunday, James said, "I can't call him Finn, we have to come up with something else." I knew he was right -- Finn didn't seem to be the perfect fit.
We finally decided to name him Marley after Bob Marley and that choice is actually part of a family story that I'm keeping to myself. Let's just say it's an ode to a dog that I loved long, long ago.
Choosing Marley as his name had NOTHING to do with the book or the movie (I hadn't even read the book at that point). Also, it had not occurred to me at that time that 'Marley' could be viewed as a girly name... this was before I knew that our local humane society has a penchant for naming female dogs 'Marley'. Our Marley is totally oblivious to the fact that many people assume he's a girl... as in, "Oh, SHE'S so pretty!" It doesn't really matter... all that matters is that we love him dearly!

Sushi's name: when she was with Oregon Dog Rescue, her name was Sweet Pea. I considered naming her Mrs. Sweaters (does anyone watch the show WEEDS?) but I came to my senses and picked the name Sushi because it sounded a bit similar to Sweet Pea. Sushi, of course, refers to 'fish'... my little Sushi girl can be such a stinky baby so 'fish' is very fitting!!!

I wracked my head for almost a week before I settled on "Dean" for my then 5.5 month old whippet. I chose that one mainly for the character Dean on Supernatural both for his personality and because he's cute; and my little boy is just that :)

The animal control where I got her from was calling her Sally. That just didn't fit. She was more red then so I found an Irish name that fits...Madigan, which means little dog. A somewhat formal name for a dog but it fits her so well. And it secretly was a way of naming my dog "dog".
My previous dog's name was Ilio which is Hawaiian for dog so I apparently am starting a tradition of naming my dogs "dog".

A month or so before I got Sidney we rescued a dog and (long story short) ended up naming him Crosby-a last name I really liked of a up and coming NHL hockey superstar..When I got my 6 week old pup I was determined to name her Tally because I had always wanted a dog named after my favorite NASCAR racetrack-(I'm a huge sportsfan)..."tally" stuck for a few days and then Heidi--(Marley and Sushi's mom) text me and said that one of the names we were throwing around "Sidney" kind-of fit...Well, since the NHL player Crosby's first name was Sidney-it just seemed fitting that her name should be Sidney and therefore the co-worker who adopted Crosby and myself would have Sidney & Crosby..oh and that Sidney Crosby just won the Stanley Cup this week, so MY Sidney is pretty proud of her namesake!

Went a few days trying out names and finally Pip popped into my head. Everyone thinks it's from the book Great Expectations but it's really just because he's a little Pip. I do need to read that book though.....

Wheezer came up because he wheezes and snorts..just like the Pug he is..
Raven because she is black , at first it was going to be Cheyenne but Raven is an Indian name as well so she got that.
Gus had his name from the shelter. I was going to rename him, but after I had him for a day or two..he just looked and acted like a Gus..
Boo was going to be name Cheyenne too (I love that name) but once she was in the car and we were driving down the road, she reminded me of that ghost, Casper (in the cartoon) so hence her name became Boo (It was Angie, named after her rescuer). It was also October hehe...

Wolfy fits him perfect. He even have two huge yellow fangs (that only a mother could love) that stick out of his cute little mouth!

When my friend, Claire, called to persuade me to adopt the stray girl her friends found, she told me she thought the dog might be part Irish Setter because of her red/chocolate color. In the days before she arrived at my home, I'd been thinking of a Celtic name, and Fiona felt right (even though I'm told Fiona is actually a Scottish name, not an Irish one...).
In any case, Fiona is a fitting name for my mixed breed lass: she's sweet and gentle but, at times, has a mind of her own.
A couple of months ago, I broke down & ordered a DNA test kit for her to satisfy my curiosity. As it turns out, the test showed no trace of Irish Setter, but did show Golden Retriever as a secondary breed in her makeup, along with traces of Shetland Sheepdog, Collie and German Shepherd! Who knew?? :-)
