pdxdog™.com

Portland's dog loving social network

What Charities do you love? Who do you think should benefit when pdxdog™.com creates special products and events that generate money? As a company, we want to make sure there is community benefit. We want to consider the little guys, as much as the bigger ones.

When we produced the Pups of Portland Calendar project, 50% of our proceeds, after expenses, went to DoveLewis.

What made that project so special was the community involvement, the professionals and volunteers who donated their expertise and time, and the people who let us take their dogs pictures. The Calendar was a big hit all the way around.

While the dollar percentage may vary on every project, we want to make sure the funds go to charities that members want to help. There is a good chance that members will be asked to be a part of the production team and share their talent and resources.

So who do you want to nominate?

I nominate DoveLewis and Bonnie Hayes. However, I'm sure there are a lot of other animal shelters similar to Bonnie Hayes - I give to them because they're in my immediate community - so maybe pdxdog could alternate so they all benefit at some point. I am also partial to Weimaraner Rescue orgs naturally (there is an Oregon Weim Rescue), but since the community consists of all breeds and their owners, it might make sense to focus on charities that resemble that mix and cut across everything ..

Hi Elizabeth,

I agree we should develop a good list and rotate who benefits. There are so many deserving groups, that alternating among several makes a ton of sense. I tend to agree that being breed specific might be tough in this community.

Thanks for putting your ideas up! This will create a list and, when it comes time for one project or another, we can whittle the list and perhaps the membership can vote.

This is excellent feedback, let's keep going. When I had the Pearl Retriever I also found myself giving to many different good causes! Mostly through product donations.

I like the tier idea. I am very happy that we are getting this discussion going!

For local chariites, I like Dove Lewis too. They were wonderful to us during one of the worst times I can remember a few years back.
I also like Animal Legal Defense Fund...a group of attorneys who represent the animals in cases of abuse/neglect/etc and who work tirelessly to put abusers behind bars. They are national, but have a local office.
aldf.org

We give to shelters too. And there's always Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah....they're amazing. I went down there and volunteered once and can't wait to go back! It's truly a gorgeous area in Utah, run by true angels. I highly recommend going if you ever get the chance!

For sure the Oregon Spay/Neuter fund! I rescued 2 dogs who were both intact and they helped out soooo much! Dove Lewis too! I've been lucky and not had to use them yet (knock on wood!) but I know people who have and it's been a life saver...literally!

Thank you Andrea for starting this very important discussion.
Dove Lewis, Bonnie Hayes, Spay and Neuter are worthy Charities and deserve all the support they can get. I would also like to mention a lesser known small, 501 (c) (3) non profit, foster based rescue. Oregon Dog Rescue depends soley on donations, adoption fees and the goodwill of people.

Well, we have to add our opinion then too and add Guide dogs for the Blind and Oregon Dog Rescue:) 2 groups we work closely with and like to support any way we can!

Kim, Sid and Claudi too!

I tend to donate to a lot of OHS fundraisers :)

I like Family Dog New Life and The Pixie Project. Both don't seem to have the budgets that some other rescues have and could probably use the boost!

We just adopted a special needs puppy from Animal Rescue and Care Fund and they were wonderful. I've also volunteered with Portland Animal Welfare team that provides care to pets of homeless and low income people. It was so amazing to see how much these people care for their pets, even to the point where they would go hungry to be sure their pet was cared for.
